SNAP Employment & Training

The SNAP E&T program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). Florida’s SNAP E&T program is designed to assist eligible SNAP E&T participants to obtain skills through education, training, or work experience that will increase self-sufficiency and lead to employment. The Florida Department of Commerce, in partnership with the Local Workforce Development Boards (LWDBs), is responsible for the administration of SNAP E&T.

Who is Eligible?

A SNAP E&T participant is an able-bodied adult without dependents (ABAWD) who is required to participate in work activities to maintain eligibility for food assistance.

An ABAWD:

  • Is between the ages of 18 – 52
  • Is not in school at least half-time
  • Does not work at least 20 hours a week
  • Does not earn at least $217.50 a week
  • Does not have a documented medical limitation
  • Does not meet other criteria, outlined by federal regulations, that prevents them from working

​Effective 11/20/2023 the state of Florida further expanded the age of ABAWDs subject to mandatory work requirements to also include individuals aged 53-59.

Qualifying Work Components

The SNAP E&T program offers ABAWDs the opportunity to meet the mandatory work requirements of the program through participation in qualifying work components available through career centers across the state.

Qualifying work components available to ABAWDs include:

  • Job Search (in combination with other activities)
  • Job Search Training (in combination with other activities)
  • Work Experience
  • Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act services
  • Trade Adjustment Assistance services
  • Education/Vocational Training

Exemptions and Exceptions

*** The Department of Children and Family’s (DCF) staff determines all exemptions and exceptions. Participants must contact DCF with Exemption and Exception Requests. ***

Please keep in mind, if you are not granted an exemption or exception, you will be required to comply with the program to receive FS benefits.
